5A: Identifying Local Opportunities
Opportunity 1:
Vote by mail helps republicans. So why is Trump bashing it?
As the election is slowly creeping up on us amid the Covid-19 crisis, legislation is starting to look at other alternatives for voting. One alternative they are exploring is vote-by-mail. The country's president has continued to attack expanded use of mail-in-ballots.
The problem in this situation is the option for voter fraud. Trump believes that if our country does opt in to vote-by-mail it would give the democrats a huge advantage for the upcoming election.
In this case, Trump, and all other republicans have the problem. The republican party might be at risk to voter fraud hence losing them the election
Opportunity 2:
The party has started: Tampa Bay bars are open, just not all of them
As we continue fighting the covid-19 crisis, regulators are making swift decisions to re open local businesses. Most businesses are starting to re open with 25%-50% capacity in the city of Tampa Bay. This includes local bars, but not all of them are able to open.
The problem in this situation is that some bars are still unable to open. Bars might not be the most essential to the city's economy but they still generate revenue, and it this point, anything will help if we want to avoid an economic depression.
In this case, local bars that can't open yet have the problem. In early march, city, state, and national officials made it mandatory that we close up shop for certain non-essential businesses. That's almost three months of not making profit and being able to pay rent. If city officials continue halting the opening of these house hold names bars, they will completely go out of business.
Opportunity 3:
Federal judge clears way for felons to vote
This article states that federal officials are now letting hundreds of thousand convicted felons vote in the upcoming election.
The problem in this case is letting someone who is mentally incapable to vote. In my opinion there should be some sort of screening process before you let some who has been convicted of a violent crime to vote. They were obviously not mentally stable when they got arrested so what makes you think they are now?
In this case, both the republican and democratic parties have the problem. This election should be fair and just and not be jeopardize by mentally unstable people swaying the election.
Opportunity 4:
Why is Disney World re-opening a month after Sea World and Universal?
This article states that Disney World, Florida's biggest tourist attraction is still unable to reopen even though Seaworld and Universal are allowed to open.
The problem in this case is losing millions of dollars due to Disney not being able to open. Orlando's economy is mostly dependent on tourism and if their doors remained closed, Orlando could take a huge hit.
Orlando, Florida, and Disney all have the problem in this case. Disney has the problem because they continue to lose money being closed to the public. This also impacts of the city of Orlando and the state of Florida because we are largely a tourist economy. If the beaches, sea world, and universal are open, why not Disney?
Opportunity 5:
41 millions have lost jobs since virus hit, but layoffs slow
This article states unemployment has gone through the roof due to the closing of businesses. As the economy starts to open up, some people are gaining their jobs back but some are finding it harder than others.
The problem in this case is the amount of people being laid off due to the covid outbreak. America just hit an all time high 14.7% unemployment rate and it will continue to climb if we don't start opening up the economy.
In this case, the unemployed have the problem. Sure, they can accept checks from the government every month but that might not be enough for people supporting a family.
